Export Certification within the EU

Gelissen Paardentransport offers the opportunity of export inspection within the EU for horses every Tuesday. A veterinary surgeon from the VWA (Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) checks the horses and their passports on that day. Following a successful inspection, the vet then issues a health certificate. The costs involved in this are generally lower than when an owner has this inspection done per horse at his home address. Because we have all the horses that are to be transported on Tuesday inspected at the same time at Gelissen Paardentransport, we can carry this out for a modest cost.

Export Certification for outside the EU

We can also have the export inspection carried out for horses that we are transporting to countries outside the EU. Depending on the country to which the horse is travelling, there often has to be a blood sample taken and possibly a CEM test. These tests also have to be repeated at a few days’ interval for certain countries.Wij sturen deze testen naar een gecertificeerd laboratorium. We send these tests to a certified laboratory. Once the result is known, a vet from the WVA will draw up the export certification at Gelissen Paardentransport.

Import Certificeringen

When horses are transported from another EU country to the Netherlands, you can usually have the necessary export certificate drawn up by the Ministry of Agriculture in the country concerned. The United Kingdom is an exception to this. When horses are transported from the United Kingdom to another country in the EU you have to ask for a health certificate and an export licence in the United Kingdom. This health certificate has to be issued by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) in the United Kingdom. A local licensed vet will stamp this within 24 hours prior to departure.

The export license can be requested earlier from DEFRA. This application takes in principle 7 days but this document is also valid for one month.
